figures

Synopsis

The German word gestalt means "configuration," "figure," or any whole pattern with characteristics different from its parts. The essential point of gestalt is that in perception the whole is different from the sum of its parts.

I have always believed in the concept of the record. Records are novels. They are comprised of different tracks (or chapters). Within the story of a record we should find a rising action, a climax, and a resolution. The experience of the individual components is different than the experience of the larger work. It is just as important to listen to one song and experience it alone, as it is to exist 3 dimensionally, in the present, and live the record as a whole. We acknowledge the energies within a system, and we celebrate the system itself. This is gestalt.

Figures is a record about loss and recovery; a story in which figures are lost and figures are found. Familiar figures in one's life are points of reference. They are people, places, states of mind, emotions. When these constants are removed the skyline of our life changes. The shape of our world is altered. As forms change so do responses, perception, and experience. We experience things in a way that we hadn't before. The choices we make and the way in which we function are fueled by a brand new energy. The character in this story is on a trip where the shape of his life keeps changing. He pulls elements from various people, belief systems, and inspirations to design new figures, in a quest to become whole again.
